Sept 1966, Ft Bliss TX Basic training (damn 50years ago). Somehow our Sgt Field First Dsgt SFC Q got into the platoon bay without anyone seeing him and calling “At Ease”. Our punishment…we have to salute every Drill Sgt we see the rest of the day

Me and two others have to go on Sick call and the Dispensary is about a quarter mile away. We’re just dumbass privates and we don’t want to get in any more trouble, right? We pass a couple of DS, pop a salute on them and right at that moment the Battalion CO drives by.

Before the DS’s can kill us, the Col wants to know why we’re saluting them. We’re privates, we tell him, he wants to know what company and sends us on to the Dispensary with the warning we do not salute sgts.

Our Sgt Field First was extra kind to us the rest of the day.
