I was in basic in 2004. My platoon had 3 DS’s. One was a 19K, other was 11B, tanker and infantry respectively and they were standard fear of God DSs. The third however was a 42A. He was only about 5’7″ and rather thin.
It seemed like he had a lot to prove because he was always the loudest and always had his mean face on. Fast forward to end of cycle FTX. Doing movement to contact trough the woods in a wedge formation. This DS is running with my squad.
Suddenly we start taking fire. We hit the dirt, find cover and fire back. He has me radio it in and after that I ask him what we should do now. He looks me square in the face the look of extreme stress possibly fear in his eyes and says, “well fck private. How the fck am I supposed to know I’m a goddamn 42A! I don’t know what the fck I’m doing I just send emails and sht!”.
Surprised the hell out of me I don t know what caused him to snap like that but for the last few days in basic after the FTX he was overly nice to everyone.
